05212018 - Flood Awareness Week (May 2018) IOv FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DENTON Jessica Rogers • (940) 349-7531 • Jessica.Rogers@cityofdenton.com City Participates in Flood Awareness Week DENTON, TX, May 21, 2018—Governor Greg Abbott has proclaimed the week of May 21-25 as Flood Awareness Week in Texas; and the City of Denton wants all residents and visitors to remember to "Turn Around, Don't Drown"when faced with flooding and flash flooding. "Throughout history, flooding has been a real threat to life, safety, and property, especially here in Texas," said Floodplain Administrator Dale Crown. "Flood Awareness Week is a great way for us to engage residents and help them find ways to protect themselves in dangerous situations." According to Governor Abbott's proclamation, flooding and flash flooding can create hazards any time of the year. It is important that Texans understand the dangers, pay attention to flood watches and warnings, assemble a"preparedness kit" if they are in a flood-prone area, and have an emergency plan and communication strategy in case of evacuation. In recognition of Flood Awareness Week, the City is encouraging residents to review flood safety tips and maps that show local flood hazard areas. The City has a floodplain layer available on its GIS maps that is useful in helping to determine if you live in a floodplain. However, residents are encouraged to take precautions, stay alert in adverse weather conditions, and consider purchasing flood insurance, even if they do not live in a floodplain. "Flooding is a natural and often unpredictable occurrence. It can happen anywhere, even in low risk areas," said Crown. "We encourage all residents and businesses in Denton to review their property information and look into flood insurance." Residents can view floodplain information by going to the City's website, www.cityofdenton.com, clicking on the magnifying glass in the upper right hand corner, and searching"GIS Maps." The Interactive Map allows users to view their floodplain information. Residents can also go to the Texas Floodplain Management Association's website at www.tfina.org to find additional helpful resources.
