1978-033AN ORDINANCE AMENDING THE CODE OF THE CITY OF DENTON BY ADOPTING
THE NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CODE~ 1978 EDITION, WITH CERTAIN DELE-
TIONS AND AMENDMENTS, PRESCRIBING MINIMUM STANDARDS OF WORK, AND
ELIMINATING THE REQUIREMENT OF A BOND, PROVIDING PENALTIES FOR
VIOLATIONS OF THE NEW CODE, AND DECLARING AN EFFECTIVE DATE
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DENTON, TEXAS, HEREBY ORDAINS
PART I
That Sections 9-1 and 9-6 of Article I, Chapter 9 of the Code
of Ordinances of the City of Denton, Texas, is hereby amended and
shall hereafter read as follows
ARTICLE I IN GENERAL
Section 9-1 COMPLIANCE WITH NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CODE, 1978 EDITION, REQUIRED
The National Electrical Code, 1978 Edition, as recommended by
the National Fire Protection Association, copies of which are on file
in the office of the City Secretary, is hereby adopted and designated
as the Electrical Code of the C~ty the same as though sa~d volume of
such code were copied at length hereln~ subject to the deletions and
amendments enumerated hereafter
1 Section 210-8 GROUND FAULT CIRCUIT PROTECTION
(a) DWELLING UNITS
(1) All 120-volt, single-phase, 15 and 20-ampere
receptacles ~nstalled in bathrooms and garages
of dwelling units may have ground-fault circuit
interrupter protection for personnel
(2) Ail 120-volt, single-phase, 15 and 20-ampere
receptacles installed outdoors where there is
direct grade level access to the dwelling unit
and to the receptacles may have ground-fault
circuit interrupter protection for personnel
Bathroom A bathroom is an area Including a
basin with one or more of the following A
to~let, a tub, or a shower
Such ground-fault c~rcult ~nterrupter protection
may be provided for other circuits, locations,
and occupancies, and where used, w~ll provide
addltonal protection against line-to-ground shock
hazard

(a) A metal undergound water pipe zn d~rect contact with
the earth for 10 feet or more (including any metal
well casing effectively bonded to the p~pe) and elec-
trically continuous (or made electrically continuous
by bonding around mnsulatmng jomnts or sectmons or
insulatmng pipe) to the point o£ connectmon of the
groundmng electrode conductor and the bondmng con-
ductors Contmnumty of the groundmng path or the
bonding connection to mntermor pmpmng shall not
rely on water meters
4 Section S30-S USES PERMITTED OR NOT PERMITTED
Type NM and Type NYC cables shall be permitted to
be used mn one and two fammly dwellmngs, or multm-
family dwellmngs not exceeding three floors above
grade For the purpose of thms artmcle, the first
floor of a bumldmng shall he that floor desmgned
for human habitation whmch ms level wmth or above
finmshed grade of the extermor wall lmne of 50 per-
cent or more of its permmeter
Sectmon 9-0 MINIMUM STANDARDS OF WORK
In all new work or revmsmons of old work, new knob and tube
wmr~ng systems shall not be used for interior wmrmng mn the Cmty
Ail work shall be in metal oondu~t except smngle and multm-
family dwellings not exceeding three floors above Krade Other
specmfmc exceptions may be permmtted wmth a written permmt from the
city electrmcal mnspector authormzmng such specmfmcatmons
Alummnum wmre and copper-clad alummnum wmre smaller than No
6 Gauge shall be prohibited Aluminum wire and copper-clad alummnum
wire No 6 Gauge and larger may be used only wroth approved connectors
and terminals
PART II
That Section 9-34 of Artmcle III "Master and Journeyman Elec-
trmczan", Chapter 9 of the Code of Ordmnances of the City of Denton,
Texas, is hereby deleted
PART III
Any person who vmolates any provmsmon of thms ordinance shall
be deemed guilty of a mmsdemeanor, and, upon conviction, shall be
punmshed by a fmne not to exceed Two Hundred ($200 00) Dollars Each
day such a vlolatzon shall contmnue or be permmtted, shall be treated
as a separate offense
PART IV
That mf any sectmon, subsection, paragraph, sentence, clause,
phrase or word in this ordinance, or applmcatmon thereof to any per-
son or czrcumstances ms held mnvalid by any court of competent jurms-

diction, such holding shall not affect the valldlty of the rema~n-
lng port~ons of this ordinance, and the City Council of the City of
Denton, Texas, hereby declares it would have enacted such remaining
portions despite any such invalidity
PART V
That th~s ordinance shall become effective fourteen days from
the date of its passage, and the City Secretary is hereby d~rected
to cause the captzon of thzs ordInance to be published twice in the
Denton Record-Chronicle, the official newspaper of the C~ty of Denton,
Texas, within ten (10) days of the date of its passage
