FACIE SPEED LIMIT ALONG CERTAIN DEFINED PORTIONS OF UNIVERSITY
DRIVE (STATE HIGHWAY 24) FROM A POINT BETWEEN BELL AVENUE AND
LOCUST STREET TO A POINT EAST OF HIGHWAY LOOP 288, PROVIDING
A SPECIAL SCHOOL CROSSING ZONE, PROVIDING A PENALTY FOR VIO-
LATIONS, AND DECLARING AN EFFECTIVE DATE
WHERE~S, the traffic engineering department of the City
of Denton has completed a speed zone study on
State Highway 24, making a recommendation which
has been agreed upon by both the C~ty of Denton
and the State Highway Department to closely cor-
respond to the speeds at which the normal and
prudent driver will operate under the existing
conditions, and
WHEREAS, the recommended speed limits are hereby deter-
mined and declared to be the maximum speed which
is reasonable and prudent under ideal conditions
and circumstances, exceeding which shall be prima
facle evidence of driving and operating at a
speed not reasonable or prudent and therefore
unlawful
THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DENTON, TEXAS, HEREBY ORDAINS
SECTION I
That the speed l~mlts which shall be the maximum
lawful speed, exceeding which shall be deemed not reasonable
or prudent, along the below described portions of University
Drive (State Highway 24) are hereby declared and established
as follows
1 Beginning at a point 800 feet west of the
center line of Bell Avenue, thence east to
a point 1000 feet east of the center line
of Bell Avenue the speed limits shall be
30 miles per hour,
2 From said above point east to a point 500
feet east of the center l~ne of Nottingham
Drive the speed l~mlts shall be 35 miles
per hour,
3 From the above sa~d point east to a point
300 feet east of the center line of H~ghway
Loop 288 the speed l~mlt shall be 45 m~les
per hour,
4 From the above polnt east for a distance of
2000 feet the speed limit shall be 50 m~les
per hour,
5 From the above point east for a distance of
2000 feet to a point 4300 feet east of the
center line of Highway Loop 288 the speed
llmlt shall be 60 miles per hour,
6 PROVIDED, ~n addition to all the above, the
speed l~m~t shall be 20 m~les per hour between
the hours of 7 30 A M and 9 00 A M , and be-
tween the hours of 3 00 P M and 4 00 P M
on school days, BEGINNING at a point 350 feet
west of the center line of Redwood Street
thence east for a d~stance of 700 feet to a
point 350 feet east of the oenterl~ne of
Redwood Street. Thls special zone ~s deemed
necessary for the safety of numerous children
crossing w~th~n th~s zone travelling to and
from school during these hours
That the penal provision of Sections 143 and 144
of Texas Revised C~v~l Statutes, Article 6701d, are hereby
· ncorporated and made a part of thls ordlnance as ~f set forth
· n full here~n, and that the above established maxlmum prlma
fac~e speed l~mlts were established under the provisions of
Section 169 of sa~d Article 6701d
SECTION II
That th~s ord~nanoe shall repeal any other ordin-
ance · n conflict herewlth, to the extent of any such conflict
SECTION III
That this ordinance shall become and be effective
on and after April 1, 1970, and the C~ty Secretary ~s hereby
dlrected to cause the caption hereof to be published twice ~n
the Denton Record-Chronicle w~th~n ten (10) days of the date
of ~ts passage
