Mayor's Day of Concern for the Hungry
Food Drive and Donations Collected June 15-26
DENTON, TX, May 22, 2019-Mayor Chris Watts announced the Mayor's Day of Concern for
the Hungry food drive at the May 21 City Council meeting. This is the eighth year of the event
encouraging residents and businesses in Denton to help address hunger in the community with a
food collection drive.
More than 159,000 people in Denton County struggle with food insecurity, which means they do
not know where their next meal will come from. In the Denton Independent School District
alone, there are 12,142 students who are on free lunches and 1,863 students who are on reduced-
priced lunches, or 46 percent of the student population.
Every resident and business in Denton can help address hunger by dropping food donations from
June 15-26 at participating non-profit and business locations throughout the city, which are
available online at www.UnitedWayDenton.org/MDOC. This is also the second year that
monetary donations will be accepted online. Food pantries are able to make each dollar go
further by purchasing in bulk through existing partnerships. Every$1 donated buys three pounds
of food.
The food drive will be held in June this year to better serve the needs of local food pantries and
kitchens. Food donations slow down during the summer, yet the need increases with families and
children out of school.
The Mayor's Day of Concern is a collaborative effort between the City of Denton and a team of
local organizations including the Denton Community Food Center, Denton Community Market,
Denton County Friends of the Family, Our Daily Bread,NCTC Corinth Campus, The Salvation
Army of Denton, Vision Ministries, and United Way of Denton County.
Results from the drive will be announced at the Mayor's Day of Concern event at the Denton
Community Market on Saturday, June 29 at 10 a.m.
