Community Invited to Downtown Cultural District Naming Celebration

What: The Original Denton District Naming Celebration
When: Thursday, Oct. 17, 2019, 6-8 p.m.
Where: Patterson-Appleton Arts Center, 400 E. Hickory St.
Details:
Next week, the City will host a reception to celebrate the Original Denton District's official
designation as a cultural district by the Texas Commission on the Arts (TCA). The celebration
will take place at the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center on Thursday, Oct. 17, from 6 to 8 p.m.
At the event,the TCA will give a proclamation presentation, and representatives from the City and
the Public Art Committee will provide a brief presentation about the new district. Members of the
community who support the arts,music, and creative activities in Denton are encouraged to attend
the event. Alongside details about the district, live music and light refreshments will be provided.
The TCA Cultural Districts Program celebrates existing concentrations of cultural assets,clustered
in walkable areas, that a city wants to promote to residents and visitors. After months of work, the
City of Denton named the greater downtown area as the Original Denton District, since it
represents both the beginnings of our community and the uniqueness of our cultural assets. The
City applied to officially designate the Original Denton District by TCA earlier this summer, with
the application being approved in September. Denton is now one of only 37 Texas cities with state-
designated cultural districts.
