2018-03-18 Minutes MINUTES CITY OF DENTON DENTON PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD EMILY FOWLER LIBRARY-MARCH 12, 2018 After determining that a quorum was present,the Denton Public Library Board convened on Monday, March 12,2018, at 5:35 p.m. The meeting was held at the Denton Chamber of Commerce Board Room, Denton, Texas, 76201. PRESENT: Alice Mankoff,Laura Cantu,Amy Taylor, Sherry DeBorde,Kate Margolis ABSENT: Sarah Gamblin, Sashenka Lopez STAFF PRESENT: Jennifer Bekker,Kimberly Wells GUESTS: Holly Caper of Austin Street 1. PRESENTATION FROM MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC Holly Caper of Austin Street,Denton proposed the library establish a Tool Lending Library for power tools. She pointed the committee to Portland, Oregon's program. Caper said access to tools promotes recycling and reusing. The library could host user workshops as well. She argued that such a library feature would especially benefit people who live in apartments and small spaces. 2.ITEMS FOR CONSIDERATON A. Consider approval of minutes form the March 12, 2018 meeting. Cantu motion to approve. Margolis seconded.Unanimous approval. B. Received a report and held a discussion regarding: 1.Kimberly Wells presented Online Library Card Applications— New online application limited to customers with addresses with zip codes that are in the City of Denton. It is possible that some zip codes which have city of Denton residents in it also have non-city of Denton residents in places. The risk,however is low. • Application for e-card is not automated as that service was expensive. Instead,a librarian receives the application via email and issues the e-card,mails out the card to the patron. This program will be up and running by the end of March. • Limits customers to e-access for materials for 60 days only. After 60 days,they must come into the library for a card. • Customers can not check out physical items with the e-card. Jennifer Bekker presented the following: 2. Legacy Lab Policy(Exhibit 1)review and discussion. Labs allow conversion of memories to digital format from other formats(8 mm,VHS). • The program uses the laptop checkout procedures. • Customers must make an appointment,get training. • The service is available to customers 10 and up. • Board reviewed printed Legacy Labs policy. Motion to approve Legacy Labs Policy by Margolis. Seconded by Cantu. Unanimous approval. 3. TMDLA Achievement of Excellence in Libraries Award honoring City of Denton for its library system 4.Library Annual Report 2016-2017 presentation • 92%Customer Satisfaction Rating-only the Fire Department surpassed this rating within the City of Denton • 138 people per hour in the library • 1 out of every 3 people who come into the library are helped by library staff • 1,183,208 items checked out • 50,000 attendees to library events,which includes DPL2Go • Salaries and benefits are about 62%,Materials are 11% • A transfer of funds to Technology Services for software,hardware,replacement, maintenance, and support is over 1 million annually • Highlights o Education- ELEVATE Conference April 2018 • Summer Reading Challenge (Denton read 2.3 mil minutes and Friends provided books) • Solar Eclipse Watching Parties • Tri-Wizard Tournament for Teens • Working to provide services to special needs citizens o Monthly program for children with sensory issues o A program for adults with special needs (focus on crafts and verbal communication o Outreach to Denton State School monthly(Carmen) o Community-Annual Star Wars Convention,Partnering with Denton ISD for Science Nights and Literacy Nights. Every elementary school in Denton city limits gets a visit from librarians about the Summer Reading Challenge,Reach out to Denton Youth,Bring a Blanket Storytime (in the pouring rain) - 250 people still attended,DPL2Go is working closely with MLK Rec. Center at least once per month o Resources- • Recorded and uploaded Professors Corner in which professors' talk about literary texts. This program is supported by Texas Humanities Grant • Working with Denton Police Department--provided office space for police department • Annual Inventory • Monthly Spanish Story Time • All IPADS in all branches updated • Completed Implementation with Bibliocommons catalog tool • Linked Oral histories to catalog • Work with Denton ISD Adult Ed classes • Unified DPL2Go • Small Business Support Group • Created bookmarks • Worked to serve City of Denton employees, including curriculum support for City of Denton HR • Staff Mentoring Program—in second year • Staff Training • Working on Spanish language training for staff • Received for$20,000 from city council for downloadable and streaming content,likely to ask for more from city council as Hoopla is popular. • Updated Facilities o On the Horizon: Updating youth areas at Fowler and North Branch; Online reading and tracking for Summer Reading Challenge program; Discovery Kits; and Tech Soup software donation service (all new operating software and software at deeply discounted prices) 5.Library Needs Assessment/Feasibility Study for future fourth library branch.Looking to find cost savings in salary to commission a study. 6.2018 Texas Library Association Annual Conference in Dallas C. Emily Fowler Library Foundation report: Bekker reported no changes D. Friends of the Denton Public Library report: Bekker reported that Friends approved funding requests for the year. 3.
