Citizen Connection Dec 2019WASTE AND RECYCLING MONTHLY
COLLECTION RATES DECREASE BY $3
Effective Nov. 6, residential trash and
recycling collection rates have been
reduced by $3 per month. Customers
will begin seeing decreased rates with
subsequent billing cycles.
Lower collection fees are due to increased
revenue received from six independent
companies making waste-volume and rate
agreements with the City.
The increased revenue from the
contracted agreements offsets the cost
associated with landfill programs that
residents pay through monthly collection
fees. This grants the City the opportunity
to provide rate decreases for residential
customers. See the new residential
collection rates below.
The City of Denton collects and composts more than 1,000 Christmas trees every year and
turns them into Dyno Dirt. This year, curbside collection of un-decorated, non-artificial,
non-flocked trees will occur Dec. 26 through Jan. 31.
After removing all decorations—including lights,
ornaments, tinsel, wire, ribbon, tree skirts, and stands—
call (940) 349-8700 to schedule a free tree collection.
Once scheduled, place real trees at the curb at least
four feet away from carts and other objects by 7 a.m.
on your scheduled collection day. Artificial, flocked,
or decorated trees cannot be composted and will not
be collected as brush. If you have an artificial, flocked,
or decorated tree it can be scheduled as a bulky item
pickup by calling (940) 349-8700.
If you do not have curbside service, real trees can be taken to the City of Denton Landfill,
1527 S Mayhill Rd., and it will be composted at no charge Dec. 26 through Jan. 31. Extra
holiday recycling, such as large cardboard boxes, may also be taken to the landfill or one of
the public recycling drop-off centers at no cost.

You may also take any excess trash accumulated during the holiday season to the landfill
for a fee. Excess trash may also be stored and placed in the trash cart weekly until all excess
trash is disposed. Trash placed outside the cart will not be collected.

HOLIDAY COLLECTION SCHEDULE AND CLOSINGS
2020 brings a new chance to make recycling
right a priority this new year.
Many people want to do their part in helping
our environment by recycling, but recycling
has to be done properly. Before you toss
items into your blue cart remember that they
have to be empty, clean, and dry. It’s an easy
mantra to incorporate into your regular
disposal routine.
Here are some tips to help make sure that
your recyclables don’t end up in the landfill:
• Make sure that all items are dry, especially
paper and cardboard
• Rinse out jars with water
• Items with liquid or food still in them
cannot be recycled
• Remember to flatten boxes before putting
them in your blue cart
• No Styrofoam
NEW YEAR MANTRA: EMPTY, CLEAN AND DRY
There are only six items that can be recycled in
your blue cart: paper, cardboard, plastics #1-7,
food and beverage glass, cartons and metal
cans. Don’t end up with an orange tag on your
door this year for inserting materials that don’t
belong in your blue bin such as plastic bags or
food waste. Recycling right is easy!
If you don’t have a blue recycling cart at your
home you can always take it to the Denton
Landfill (1527 S. Mayhill) free of charge. Visit
www.dentonrecycles.com for more information
about curbside recycling, free public drop-off
centers and other residential services.
