Denton City Council Passes Resolution Petitioning State to
Consider Additional Housing Protections for Unemployed Residents
Petition Includes Renter Protections Resulting from COVID-19 Response
DENTON, TX,April 8, 2020—On Tuesday, April 7, 2020, the Denton City Council
unanimously passed a resolution requesting a special session of the Texas Legislature to consider
suspending eviction proceedings and additional protections for individuals and families in need
due to the state-wide COVID-19 (Coronavirus)response.
The resolution, includes the following requests:
• For Governor Greg Abbott to call a special session of the Texas Legislature to consider
additional measures to address the public health emergency, including to cure default of
required rent payment if caused by a delay of unemployment benefits,
• The State to disallow eviction or foreclosure of any persons that qualify for unemployment
benefits but have yet to receive them,
• The State to increase efficiency of processing in accepting and remitting benefits to those
experiencing unemployment; and
• That landlords and renters continue to work together with special consideration for
financial hardships resulting from unexpected employment loss.
The resolution also expressed the Council's appreciation to Governor Abbott and the Texas
Supreme Court for their efforts thus far to protect the health, safety, and security of the citizens
of the State of Texas during this public health emergency.
