2017-02-14 Minutes DENTON ANIMAL SHELTER ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING Minutes from Tuesday,February 14,2017 PRESENT: Anne Sullivan,Nanci Kimmey,Lt.Hildebrand,Kathleen Duffy,Paul O'Neil ABSENT: Dr.Angie Paben (Naomi Woods has resigned from her position and Jessica Jackson is no longer employed at the shelter) I. Called to Order The meeting was called to order by Nanci Kimmey at 10:33 a.m. II. Approval of December 13,2016 minutes Motion was made by Nanci Kimmey to approve minutes as reviewed;seconded by Anne Sullivan. III. Review of Denton Animal Shelter Statistics—Paul O'Neil Statistics were reviewed as of February meeting for 2016 compared to 2015: Adoptions+4.9%;Reclaimed-1.8%;Transferred-4.5%. 2015 Total number of cats and dogs for 2015 -4031 2016 Total number of cats and dogs for 2016-4567 2015 Live Release Rate 84.1% 2016 Live Release Rate 88.7% IV. Denton Animal Shelter Reports—Paul O'Neil A. Staff and Board Positions Two open positions for Animal Control Officers. Currently they are reviewing the option of hiring two Animal Tech or ACO positions. On staff they have four(4)certified ACOs. Training is on-going with specific classes being offered in-house and Austin on April 22-24 for certification. B. Kennel Reports Year to date reports as of January compared to 2016: Adoption -2.3%;Reclaimed +6.3%; Transferred +2.2%; Euthanized +6.4%. Most euthanized animals are illness related. Dr.Munsel,vet technicians and staff are reorganizing and changing some procedures for the cats. There will no longer be cats with ringworm in the separate front area of Cat Room,specific areas will be designated in isolation for ringworm and respiratory infections. There is on-going training provided by the vet techs to the shelter staff on proper handling,cleaning,etc. Most medicines will be administered by the vet technicians. C. ADOPTION PROGRAM The shelter is still using Denton Animal Support Foundation subsidy funds for senior and special needs animals. D. Community Events DASF and TCAP—February 23—Low Cost immunization clinic at the shelter. Presentations at schools were given by Gayla Nelson,at Krum elementary and Nicole Heyer at Argyle Middle school. D. FUNDRAISERS Local businesses have sponsored Pints for Pups, Lucky Lou's Tacos and scheduled for May 13,Hogs 4 Paws ride. E. DONATIONS Donations of food and supplies for the animals at the animal shelter continue. F. Volunteers Orientations are held monthly for new volunteers. Complaints from volunteers should be directed to Rachel Ferryman to be reviewed by shelter Manager Paul O'Neil. The Volunteer Recognition Program has continued and we will have a Volunteer of the Year Party with an additional Special Appreciation Award on March 6 at 6:30. Invitations have been extended to the volunteers, mayor,city council,DPS,etc. Costs associated with this program include plaques,frames for pictures and brass plaques for each volunteer of the month. Decorations and food will be provided for this event thanks to an anonymous donor. V. Outside Yard Fencing and Rollers for the Stainless Steel Kennels—Lt.Hildebrand 1. Outside Yard Fencing is complete. There are six large dog runs on the East side;three each on north and south ends. 2. Rollers for the Stainless Kennels—One purchase order had been awarded to a contractor who decided not to do it. Another bid is being done to rebid the purchase order. 3. Isolation Room -Large 36"x 60"kennel has been installed for a very large dog. X. Adjourned Motion was made to adjourn the meeting at 11:25 by Kathleen Duffy and seconded by Nanci Kimmey.
