Deputy Fire Marshal II - IG0026 - FIRE PREVENTION City of Denton Job Job Description Effective Date: 07/06/2013  Revision Date: 09/21/2015  Position ID: IG0026  Career Ladder: Fire  FLSA Designation: Non-Exempt   Title: Fire Inspector Specialist II  Department/Division:  Fire/Prevention  Reports to: Fire Protection Specialist    Definition: The Fire Inspector Specialist II position will be filled by the Fire Marshal with the approval of the Fire Chief. Responsible for inspecting properties for conformance with federal, state, county, and locally recognized laws, codes, ordinances, regulations, and standards. Fire Inspector Specialist II is responsible for performing advanced technical fire prevention, complex plan review, and inspection work that is of a diversified and complex nature. Employees in this classification work independently in the field and are responsible for decision-making requiring discretion, judgment, and familiarity with laws, codes, ordinances, regulations, and standards. The Fire Inspector Specialist II provides analysis and approval of plans, specifications, and construction documents for buildings, processes, operations, and fire protection systems and equipment to ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards. Compliance is ordered when violations are discovered. Incumbents provide technical advice of moderate complexity to City staff, private developers, and the general public. The Fire Inspector Specialist II may perform general inspections, new construction inspection, plan review, fire investigations, or other duties related to fire prevention codes, ordinances, regulations, or standards. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Fire Protection Specialist. Key Responsibilities: Inspects public, commercial, and residential properties to ensure compliance with fire laws, codes, ordinances, regulations, and standards Identifies corrective actions which must be made in order to bring properties into compliance with applicable fire codes, laws, and ordinances. Conducts fire code compliance follow-ups to ensure corrective action has been taken Conducts inspections of fire hazard complaints. Identifies conditions or situations that may hinder firefighting operations and the safety of emergency response personnel and recommends remedies to correct the conditions Inspects and tests fire protection and/or fire detection systems to verify that such systems are installed in accordance with appropriate fire laws, codes, ordinances, regulations, and standards. Issues permits in accordance with the policies of the jurisdiction Assists citizens and other agency personnel with code interpretations and information when requested, prepares written documents, and maintains files Provides court testimony regarding fire code violations Conducts plan reviews for construction, systems, and permit plans Assists in the investigation of major fires. Conducts fire investigations for origin and cause Conducts public education activities Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service. Other   Machines, Tools, Equipment and Work Aids: The essential functions of this position require the use of a personal computer including Microsoft applications; and hand tools such as shovels, chainsaws, and lighting equipment Environmental Factors: The essential functions of this position are performed in extreme weather, construction sites and Fire/explosion scenes Minimum Qualifications / Acceptable Equivalency: Current City of Denton Fire Department Civil Service Driver or Fire Inspector Specialist I Education and Experience necessary to accomplish Key Responsibilities and Core Competencies of Fire Inspector Specialist II Core Competencies: Knowledge of: City of Denton Fire Code and Building Code Fire Codes, ordinances, laws, regulations and standards Mathematical principles required to perform necessary technical calculations The street system and physical layout of the City of Denton Fire prevention practices Ability to: Make field determinations of compliance with fire codes, laws, ordinances, regulations, and standards Produce written documents with clearly organized thoughts using proper English sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar Climb ladders or steps while performing inspections Understand and interpret instructions, such as complex blueprints, schematic drawings, layouts, or other visual aids Communicate orally in English language with customers, clients, or the public in face-to-face one-on-one settings, in group settings, or using a telephone or other means of communication Work cooperatively with other City employees and the public Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others Supervise Fire Inspector Specialists I Conditions of Employment: Must have a valid driver’s license prior to employment Must pass drug test Must obtain Basic Fire Inspector certification within 180 days of assignment if not already certified Must obtain Basic Fire Investigator certification within one year of employment if not already certified Must pass a physical examination Must be able to work overtime when requested Preferences: Bilingual (Spanish) Haz Mat Technician Certified Fire Inspector Certified Fire Intermediate Instructor Fire Prevention Training from National Fire Academy Bachelor degree with a concentration in fire science, fire protection engineering, or related field This job description is not an employment agreement, contract agreement, or contract.
