Deputy Fire Marshal - IG0065 - FIRE PREVENTION City of Denton Job Description Effective Date: 4/12/03  Revision Date: 4/27/2017  Position ID: IG0065  Career Ladder:   FLSA Designation: Non Exempt   Title: Deputy Fire Marshal  Department/Division: Fire Prevention  Reports to: Fire Marshal    Definition: Responsible for performing enforcement activities in the promotion of life and property safeguards by investigating fires and bombings, determining causes and apprehending and prosecuting arson and bomb offenders. Essential Functions: Assumes the duties of the Fire Marshal in his/her absence Manages departmental Fire Incident Reporting System Supervises, evaluates, counsels, and disciplines inspectors and the inspections program Investigates fires, explosions, and hazmat incidents; determines causes, prepares reports detailing causes and estimated losses, and obtains and preserves evidence Apprehends and prosecutes arson/bomb offenders and files cases with the District Attorney Writes citations as a result of conditions found which violates fire codes and city ordinances Counsels with juveniles and children regarding false alarms and unsafe actions related to fire safety. Conducts internal affairs investigations Serves as assistant bomb squad commander Participates in meetings with civic and service organizations to help promote positive relations with the community Inspects buildings within the City of Denton and enforces City of Denton Fire Code Prepares and maintains records and reports as required Plans for, responds to, and investigates hazardous material to ensure compliance with applicable codes, laws, and ordinances Performs courtesy home fire and life safety inspections Ability to get along with customers and co-workers Regular and punctual attendance Additional Duties: Performs other duties as assigned Minimum Qualifications / Acceptable Equivalency: High School Diploma or GED Associates degree in Fire Science OR Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job Core Competencies: Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing Ability to form and maintain effective relationships with coworkers and customers Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance (evaluate per position) Conditions of Employment: Must have a valid Class “C” Driver’s License prior to employment Must pass a drug test, driver’s license check, criminal history background check, and social security number verification check Must pass a OSHA physical examination Must be able to work overtime when requested Advanced inspector Certification Fire Investigator Certification Certified Peace Officer Preferences: Bilingual in Spanish and English Two years priorexperience in Fire Prevention Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing Physical Requirements: Overall Strength Demands: The italicized word describes the overall strength demand of the functions performed by the incumbent during a typical workday.
