Mayor Watts announced his intention to resign in a letter(attached) delivered to the City Secretary on Monday, Aug. 24. While having resigned the position effective Thursday, Aug. 27, in accordance with state law Mayor Watts will continue serving in his role until a successor is elected and sworn into office. During the Thursday, Aug. 27 City Council Special Called meeting, the Denton City Council passed a resolution accepting Mayor Watts' resignation. "It has been an honor to serve this city over the previous 12 years, six of those as Mayor" said Mayor Watts. "I'm truly blessed to have had the opportunity to lead this unique place I call home. As a Council and as a community,we've built the foundation for success and as I look toward the conclusion of my service to our city, I'm confident that Denton's future is both bright and boundless." Mayor Watts has been a steadfast and dedicated public servant for the City of Denton for more than 12 years. Initially serving for three 2-year terms as a Council member representing District 4, he was elected as the City's 46th Mayor in 2014. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic,the municipal election was postponed to Nov. 3, 2020, with Mayor Watts continuing his service beyond the expected May 2020 conclusion of his term.
