Citizen Connection Aug 2020New 24/7 Customer Service
Line to Schedule Yard and
Brush Waste Collections
The City of Denton has introduced a new, self-
service option for Solid Waste pickup requests;
available in English and Spanish. Customers may
now call the Interactive Voice Response (IVR)
system at (940) 349-8740 to directly schedule
yard waste and brush requests. When submitting
the request, the IVR system will verify the caller
is an authorized account holder, so no additional
follow up is required.
24 hours a day, 7 days a week, customers can use
the IVR to:
• Opt-in to the yard waste program (kraft bags
or carts)
• Opt out of the yard waste program
• Schedule a brush collection (not required for
yard waste program subscribers unless
collection is more than 4 cubic yards)
• Schedule a bulk collection of bagged leaves 2
times per year (25 bags max for free collection
to the landfill—extra bags collected for a fee)
Customers with a Monday collection day can
place a collection request prior to 7 p.m. on
Sunday evenings for next day collection. All other
calls will be scheduled for the next collection day.
To ensure same week collection, requests should
be made by:

Celebrate American Wind
Week with DME
American Wind Week is a celebration of wind
power emerging as America’s number one source
of renewable energy, and this year it is celebrated
from August 9-15. As a proud leader in the
adoption of new and clean energy production
technologies, DME is celebrating that more than
70 percent of the energy used to power DME’s
56,459 customers is wind energy.
Wind energy is created through the use of wind
turbines. When wind blows against the blades of
a wind turbine, they rotate causing the generator
inside the turbine to turn. This results in the
generation of electricity. The wind turbines that
help power Denton are located miles away in
Cooke and Tom Green County.
DME’s decision to invest in wind energy dates back
to 2008. However, the goal of having 100 percent
of Denton’s energy load under contract by 2021
was set by City Council when they adopted the
Denton Renewable Resource Plan (DRRP) on
February 6, 2018. While DME had already
committed to increasing its renewable portfolio,
the DRRP outlined an actionable plan to improve
the City’s environmental stewardship to help DME
reach 100 percent renewable energy.
DME’s wind and solar energy practices have
resulted in a
majority of
Denton’s energy
usage being
renewable. The
chart to the right
shows DME’s
percent of
load by source.

energy practices,

It’s summer in Texas and you know what that
means – rising temperatures and scorching sun!
Don’t let this deter you from giving your summer
garden some much needed TLC, however. To
combat the heat, keep these safety tips in mind:
• Wear comfortable and weather appropriate
clothing, including a wide-brimmed hat that
protects your face and neck, especially during
the hottest part of the day.
• Wear gloves to guard against blisters, cuts,
punctures or skin irritations.
• Use sunscreen with SPF 15 (or higher).
• Use insect repellent to ward off mosquitoes
and ticks.
• Take breaks in a shaded area so that your body
has time to recover from the heat.
• Be sure to drink plenty of fluids.
• Pay attention to signs of heat exhaustion, such
as high body temperature, headache, rapid
pulse, dizziness, nausea, and/or confusion.
Make sure your garden can protect itself in the
summer heat too by using any of our Dyno Mulch
products. Mulch acts as an insulator, helping to
regulate soil temperature. It keeps plant roots cool
during the summer and warm during the winter .
For curb appeal, choose a decorative mulch in red,
brown, or black. For a more natural look, choose
Dyno Double Grind fine.
Now that you’re ready to start a summer gardening
project, be sure to check out our nutrient-rich soil
and mulch at www.cityofdenton.com/dyno.
