Camp Counselor - SA2005 - REC-LS-YOUTH/TEEN SERVICES City of Denton Job Description Title: Afterschool Action Site Leader  Position ID: SA2005  Department/Division: Parks and Recreation  Reports to: Recreational Care Supervisor  FLSA Designation: Non-Exempt  Safety Sensitive: No  DOT: No    DESCRIPTION: Assists in creating, organizing and instructing a recreation program for youth for our afterschool program, including arts and crafts, homework time, physical activities, and special interest activities for afterschool and other holiday/school closure days. Also includes assisting with various programs and special events on evenings and weekends. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Plans, organizes, and implements various recreational related activities for school age children (K-5th) Leads, supervises, and conducts classes, activities, and special events Must be able to properly supervise children and respond immediately in case of emergency, including administering first aid as necessary Follow appropriate training and lead small group activities in an atmosphere where students are actively engaged in meaningful learning and recreational experiences Maintain a clean and orderly environment for children Assist in the enforcement of program rules Maintain discipline and enforce proper safety precautions Administer medication and maintain medical records and logs Communicate effectively with the staff members, children, parents, administrators, and other contact persons using tact and good judgement Demonstrate initiative in the performance of assigned responsibilities Model and maintain high ethical standards Must be able to safely drive a 15-passenger van and transport children to various locations daily Ensure all equipment and materials are accessible, appropriate, and in good condition Maintains attendance, discipline, and injury records as needed Enforce all site and State regulations May be required to lift up to heavy items MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Must be 18 years or older High School Diploma or GED equivalent CORE COMPETENCIES: Knowledge of a variety of recreational day camp or afterschool activities and the ability to convey that knowledge into an organized recreational activity Ability to assist in developing, coordinating, and directing varied activities involved in an afterschool program Ability to maintain discipline Ability to prepare and maintain reports Ability to communicate effectively with parents, guardians, children, supervisors and co-workers Ability to motivate children Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing Ability to form and maintain effective relationships with coworkers and customers Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance and proper dress rules Knowledge of First Aid and CPR/AED procedures Ability to work under stress and handle stressful situations Ability to meet deadlines Some knowledge of childhood development and lesson planning for children C ONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Must have a valid Class "C" Driver's License and valid state required minimum automobile liability insurance prior to employment (must obtain Texas Class "C" driver's license and state required minimum automobile liability insurance within 30 days of hire per state law) with reliable transportation to travel from site to site Must pass a drug test, driver's license check, social security verification and criminal history background check Must be able to obtain American Red Cross or American Heart Association Adult and Pediatric CPR/ AED and First Aid certification within 30 day of hire Must attend and successfully complete the City’s Van Training course as soon as possible Must be able to work January 4 – May 28, 2021 Must be able to work consistently Monday -Friday from 2:45 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. and for holiday and spring break camps, teacher in-service days, and other Recreational Care special events and programs as needed on evenings and weekends Position will be approximately 16-20 hours per week for the Afterschool Program and additional hours for Recreational care programs, camps, and Special Events held during daytime, evenings, and on weekends Must be available for various trainings during December 2020 PREFERENCES: Completion of one year of college (prefer coursework emphasizing education, childhood development , or recreation studies) Previous experience working in a camp or afterschool program setting Knowledge of a variety of recreational day camp activities and the ability to convey that knowledge into organized recreational activities Basic knowledge of childhood development Basic skills in performing and instructing such activities as arts and crafts, sports, games, and creative dramatics, etc. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Overall Strength Demands: The italicized word describes the overall strength demand of the functions performed by the incumbent during a typical workday.
