011421 Press Release - Hickory Creek Sanitary Sewer Overflow FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Ryan Adams  (940) 349-8565  Ryan.Adams@cityofdenton.com OUR CORE VALUES Integrity  Fiscal Responsibility  Transparency  Outstanding Customer Service ADA/EOE/ADEA www.cityofdenton.com TDD (800) 735-2989 Sanitary Sewer Overflow Public Notification DENTON, TX, Jan. 14, 2021 - Yesterday evening a sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) to a tributary of Pecan Creek was reported to City of Denton Wastewater Department. The SSO occurred at 6404 Crapemyrtle Dr., Denton, Texas (see map below). The SSO was caused by a sewer system obstruction due to intrusive tree growth into a manhole. The department immediately dispatched emergency crews to review the conditions and stop the overflow. Staff was able to access the location and remove the blockage and stop the overflow by 9 pm last night. The estimated amount of sanitary sewer overflow was estimated at 120,000 gallons. Since last night staff conducted remediation by flushing the area with water to aid in natural degradation of the spill and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) were notified of the spill today. City staff have collected water samples along the tributary and Pecan Creek for testing and will be consistently monitoring the conditions over the next few days. The City requests that the public should avoid contact with any waste material, soil, or water in the area potentially affected by the spill. Although there is a very low possibility, if the public comes into contact with waste material, soil, or surface water potentially impacted by the spill, they should bathe and wash clothes thoroughly as soon as possible.
