Thr speciFic violations are these policy items: > > 4t2 "As a representative of tfie city I wil{ be service oriented. I will be friendly, respectful and courteous to everyone. I will be attuned and care about the needs and issues of all Denton Citizens." > i#4 As a representative of the city of Denton I will be communicative. I will communicate that I am approachable, open minded and willing to enter a dialogue. I will listen carefulfy and my respanse will add value to the conversation. > >#5 As a representative of the City af enton ! will be conperative. I 4vill work toward cansensus building and gain value farrn diverse opinions. I wifl appraach my position and relationships with a pasitive attitude...(etc.} > >(Jn August 24 and 75, Cauncilwornan Bagheri responded with contempt toward an honest request I made on Facebook for iniormation a6out her agenda. 5he also responded witr7 hostility towards Councilman Roden's response tn my question, Second, in a private Facebook message she venYcd all of her frustrations about Councilman Roden in inappropriate and unprofessi4nal ways. Third, she joined one nf her friends in an attack or rne on Faceook, related ta ti7e oriinal issue. I believe my accusatians are weU supported by the screen shots I took af our dialoue an FB and private rnessenger. > > First, here is the context. On Auust 24th I posted an Facebonk a question about flyers locally distributed in August by °'Amerieans for Prosperity." I received a visit from a canvasser representin this organization at my hom. f gfeaned that this organization was about "Schoo! Chaice" and lawering taxes. f immediately thought of the many things I learned about these issues fram Facebaok, like Ms. Bagheri's frequent posts about lowerin, taxes, and from the newly appninfed fiscally cnservative f and Z commissioner Stephen 5ullivan. I wondered ahout YI7e possible intersections of these agendas and what th7at might mean for son's educatian. > Ms. Baheri met my inquiry with hastility and arrogance which was kriggered by a factual comment made by Mr. Roden, revealing the "American Prosperity'° group's associatinn with Empower Texans, one af Ms. Baheri's endarsers. Ms. Qagheri's reply was sarcastic and disdainful toward Kevin and me "...what conclusiort are yau drawin? [iecause the only one I can draw every time you and Sarah [meaning me.. and fyi, I had never asked about this before] stari up with this shit...°` There is a lot wrong with this camment, but the rrtain issues are tliat Ms. Bagheri is escalating a cauncif conflict in a public farum, and dismissing my cancerns as a citizen and canstituent as if they were extensians of conflicts she has with Mr. Roden. This statement by 6agheri violates i#2, #4 and tf5 of the above policy. > > I persisted and IaCer was able to get more focused attentfon to my questions in a private message an cebook with Ms Bagheri. However, in that private message Ms. Bgheri lambasted Councilman Kevin Roden at length, seeking to damage my view af him, Eventually, after the diatribe against Mr. Raden, she answered my questiuns about her agenda to a dgre that helped me see her position. Nevertheless, this defaming of a colleague in the process violaes #5 above, in my apinion. > > In the rnean time, back on the Facebook thread, I found myself under attack by someone else, who was defend{ng Ms. 8agheri's right to be defensive about my question. I deFended myself addressirg this person. At this point, Ms. Bagheri pifed on, demeaning m in this public, snial media space. Apparently she Felt I was attacking her friend? (I was not aware of the connection in the moment but Ms. Bagheri is close{y associated with the attacker, a co-dministrator on the group "[)enton Matters," ) > > Since this interctian, I have found myself the target of many attacks on frequent occsions by Ms. Bagheri's ardent supporters. I can't help but think if she had treated my question with fairness, instead af contempt and ridicule, that Ms. Bagheri's supporters might have alsa ciosen to take a higher road. 7he violations of the above policy items, and the general attitude of contempt and sarcasm displayed by Ms. Bagheri oniine, has created a tribal public environment for civic discaurse. It seems that commentary on social media is perceived by Bagheri in muth the way tagging is used in some urban graffiti, as a farm af identifying gangs With this tribalist attitude the only way to initiate a dialogue is tn first demvnstrate loyalty ta the tribe, Sara Bagheri is n elected official and should be trying represent all df us, not Just those wh kraw better than to refer to her assaciation with Empower Texans. > > I fear this seems petty but I really feel City council members should not be creating such a hpstile public environnment for its citizens. If social media is not a damain that this pailcy covers well then maybe a social media palicy should be ereated, > Sarah Gamblin > 2113 Preston PI > benton, TX > J4Q 898 2091 > sgamblin@twu.edu > <FuIlSizeRender.jpg> > <FuIlSizeRender-1.jpgy > <mime-attachment> > <(}160927(79563.pdf> _ u _ ,:=1 ,,„ : : • - • . M ' !
