20-1625ORDINANCE NO.20- 1625 AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF DENTON, TEXAS, PROVIDING FOR AN IN-KIND CONTRIBUTION OF UP TO 130 CUBIC YARDS OF THE CITY’S DYNO-DIRT COMPOST AND/OR DYNO-LITE COMPOST TO FRIENDS OF SHILOH GARDEN, A LOCAL NON- PROFIT AGENCY, FOR USE BY IT TO GROW PRODUCE AT THE SHILOH FIELD COMMUNITY GARDEN WHICH WILL BE DISTRIBUTED TO FOOD INSECURE INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES; AND, PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, Friends of Shiloh Garden, a local non-profit agency, along with other individuals and groups, grow fruits and vegetables at the Shiloh Field Community Garden for distribution, through other local non-profit organizations, to the City’s homeless population and to food insecure low- and middle-income individuals and families; and WHEREAS, the Shiloh Field Community Garden is in an identified food desert, and greatly helps to address local food insecurity needs; and WHEREAS, the Shiloh Field Community Garden has many programs and projects that align with the Focus Areas and Goals of the 2012 Simply Sustainable Plan, including local food, urban agriculture, community gardening and consumption of fresh locally grown produce; and WHEREAS, the City of Denton received a request from the Friends of Shiloh Garden for assistance in purchasing Dyno-Dirt compost and/or Dyno-Lite compost for its use in its raised beds for produce currently being built at Shiloh Field Community Garden; and WHEREAS, the City Council finds that providing an in-kind contribution of Dyno-Dirt compost and/or Dyno-Lite compost to Friends of Shiloh Garden for use in growing fruits and vegetables at the Shiloh Field Community Garden for distribution, through other local non-profit organizations, to the City’s homeless population and to food insecure low- and middle-income individuals and families is a valid public purpose of the City of Denton and in the best interests of the City and its citizens, and supports providing such an in-kind contribution, accordingly; NOW THEREFORE THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DENTON HEREBY ORDAINS: SECTION 1. The City will provide to Friends of Shiloh Gardens, upon its request and without charge, up to 130 cubic yards of either Dyno-Dirt compost and/or Dyno-Lite compost (worth approximately $1,950.00 to $2,340.00) for its use to grow produce at the Shiloh Field Community Garden that will be distributed to food-insecure citizens. SECTION 2. City staff is directed to ensure the in-kind contribution of compost to Friends of Shiloh Garden is used for its intended public purpose. SECTION 3. The preamble to, and findings contained therein, are incorporated by reference and is a part of this Ordinance for all purposes. SECTION 4.
