AN ORDINANCE CANVASSING THE RETURNS AND DECLARING THE RESULTS OF
THE SPECIAL MUNICIPAL ELECTION TO ELECT TWO CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS TO
DISTRICTS 1 AND 2 OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DENTON, HELD IN THE
CITY OF DENTON ON NOVEMBER 3, 2020; DECLARING THAT NO CANDIDATE
RECEIVED THE MAJORITY OF VOTES CAST FOR DISTRICT 2 AND THAT A RUNOFF
ELECTION IS ORDERED TO BE HELD ON TUESDAY, DECEMBER 8, 2020; AND
PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DENTON HEREBY ORDAINS:
SECTION 1. The City Council finds and declares that the November 3, 2020 special
election was duly ordered for the purpose of electing council members to Districts 1 and 2; that
proper notice of said election was duly given and election officials appointed; that the election
was duly held and the returns of the election officials have been delivered to the Council, all in
accordance with the laws of the State of Texas and the Charter and ordinances of the City of
Denton.
SECTION 2. The official returns of the election, herein incorporated by reference and
attached as "Exhibit A", having been opened, examined, and canvassed, and the Council hereby
finds and declares that the following candidate received a majority of the votes cast at the
election in District 1 and is declared to be elected to the City Council of the City of Denton as
follows:
FOR DISTRICT 1: Birdia Johnson
and the candidate shall assume the duties of office on the date that they take the official oath of
office.
SECTION 3. The City Council finds and declares that no candidate received the majority
of the votes for District 2 and that a runoff election is hereby ordered to be held, in accordance
with the provision of Ordinance 20-1695, on Tuesday, December 8, 2020. Candidates in the
runoff election for District 2 will be Ronnie Anderson and Connie Baker.
SECTION 4. The City Council has found and determined that the meeting at which this
ordinance is considered is open to the public and that notice thereof was given in accordance
with provisions of the Texas open meetings law, Tex. Gov't Code Chapter 551, as amended, and
that a quorum of the City Council was present.
SECTION 5. This ordinance shall become effective immediately upon its passage and
approval.
