AN ORDINANCE AUTHORIZING THE CITY OF DENTON, TEXAS, TO JOIN SISTER
CITIES INTERNATIONAL AND TO ASSIST WITH A SEARCH FOR AN APPROPRIATE
SISTER CITY, AND TO AUTHORIZE TRAVEL EXPENSES TO VISIT POTENTIAL
SISTER CITY NOMINEES, PROVIDING RETROACTIVE EFFECT, AND AUTHORIZiNG
THE CITY MANAGER TO TAKE OTHER ACTION CONSISTENT WITH THIS
ORDINANCE, AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE
WHEREAS, the Chamber of Commerce (Chamber) has appointed a Denton Sister Cities
International (DSCI) Steenng Committee (Committee) to determine the community's interest in
and willingness to support a Sister Cities Program in Denton, and
WHEREAS, the Committee developed an informational brochure/interest survey and
dlstmbuted it to the Denton community and the community response to the survey
overwhelmingly supported a "Sister Cities Program in Denton", and
WHEREAS, the Committee undertook to rank various desirable city attributes for
selecting a Sister City and after companng seventy-eight Mexican cities with populations over
100,000 to identify the most compatible sister city for Denton and the Committee has
recommended that two cities - San Nicolas de los Garza and Cludad Victoria be wmted to
consider their selection as a Sister City, and
WHEREAS, the City Manager has recommended that the City work with the Chamber to
develop a Denton Sister City Program and by jolmng Sister Cities International and funding a
visit to the two potential Sister Cities mentioned above, NOW, THEREFORE,
THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DENTON HEREBY ORDAINS
SECTION 1 That the City Manager, working in conjunction with the DSCI Steering
Commltt,e is hereby authorized to work with the Committee to complete a membership
application, to expend funds not to exceed $5,000 to assist with travel expenses for the initial
visits to San Nicolas de los Garza and Cludad Victoria, to send at least one City staff
representative designated by the City Manager on those visits, to expend $480 to allow the City
to become a member of Sister Cities International and to take any other actions necessary to
initiate a Denton Sister Cities Program That all actions previously taken by members of the City
Manger's staffto lmtlate the Denton Sister Cities Program are hereby ratified and approved
SECTION 2 That the City Manager is authorized to make the expenditures set forth
herein
SECTION 3 That this ordinance shall become effective immediately upon its passage
and approval
