HomeMy WebLinkAbout2020-039 Transparency StarDate: April 24, 2020 Report No. 2020-039       INFORMAL STAFF REPORT TO MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL SUBJECT: City of Denton Awarded Comptroller’s Transparency Star BACKGROUND: In recognition of the City’s efforts to ensure greater financial accountability and transparency, the City of Denton has been awarded a Financial Transparency Star by the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. The City’s financial transparency website features access to financial reports, city budgets, CAFRs, payment information, downloadable data sets, and debt reports. The Comptroller’s office launched the Transparency Stars program in March 2016 to recognize cities, counties and school districts making strides to greater government transparency by providing easy online access to important financial data. The Transparency Stars program recognizes local government entities that provide online access to important financial data. Denton is one of approximately 75 Cities to be awarded the Traditional Finances Star Denton’s financial transparency site can be found at the following address: https://www.cityofdenton.com/en-us/government/open/financial-transparency . The City of Denton is now eligible to apply for several other Transparency Stars, such as Contracts and Procurement, Economic Development, Public Pensions and Debt Obligations. ATTACHMENT(S): 1. The City of Denton received a star in the area of Traditional Finances, which recognizes entities for their outstanding efforts in making their spending and revenue information available. Transparency Stars recognizes local government entities that provide easy online access to important financial data. “By providing meaningful financial data in addition to visual tools and analysis of its revenues and expenditures, the City of Denton has shown a true commitment to Texas taxpayers. This effort achieves the goals set by my office’s Transparency Stars program,” Hegar said. “I am pleased to award the City of Denton a star for its accomplishments.” The Comptroller’s office launched the Transparency Stars program in March 2016 to recognize cities, counties and school districts making important strides to greater government transparency. Local government entities can apply for stars in the areas of:  Traditional Finances,  Contracts and Procurement,  Economic Development,  Public Pensions, and  Debt Obligations. After receiving an initial star for Traditional Finances, remaining stars may be awarded in any order.
