Routes were originally designed to balance travel distance and house count to ensure that customers are serviced in a timely and efficient manner while managing the workload of the drivers and the Department. Due to the growth of the City’s southwestern sector and increased traffic, staff is experiencing increased issues in its ability to provide service and complete routes in a timely manner. Additionally, the anticipated growth in this area suggests that, without relief, the workload will only increase. To rebalance the routes as well as prepare for anticipated growth in the Tuesday service sector, approximately 1,700 customers will have their service day changed from Tuesday to Wednesday in early in 2021. DISCUSSION: The City of Denton Solid Waste and Recycling Department provides a robust collection service to its residents on a four-day schedule. To ensure that the City can continue to provide efficient, cost- effective service, the City finds itself needing to change the service day of approximately 1,700 residents, from Tuesday to Wednesday service. Residents of the Montecito and Montecito Oaks neighborhoods will be affected by the change. Date: December 4, 2020 Report No. 2020-098 The City will provide notice through a variety of means to inform and remind residents of the change, to possibly include but not be limited to:  Direct Mail  Notices attached to doors and cans  Automated Robo calls  Social Media  Homeowners associations  Press Release The service day changes will occur early in 2021, after SWR completes the installation, training and testing of its new SmartRouting Solution. Education and outreach will begin several weeks prior to the actual service day change. Benefits of this route service change include:  The elimination of staff overtime currently occurring on Tuesday’s service route  Cost savings resulting from route efficiencies  Decreased traffic and chance for vehicular accidents due to service trucks being out of neighborhoods during peak driving time  Travel time from neighborhood to the Landfill is decreased due to service trucks being out of neighborhoods during peak driving time STAFF CONTACT: Brian Boerner Director of Solid Waste 940-349-8001 brian.boerner@cityofdenton.com REQUESTOR: Staff generated PARTICIPATING DEPARTMENTS: Solid Waste and Recycling STAFF TIME TO COMPLETE REPORT: One hour
