1/11/2026 Gerard Hudspeth Work Session B 25-2310 Parks How did the name civic center come to be?Did the building have any other name When the project was first conceived and during much of its construction, the facility was officially
previously? referred to as the Denton Community Building. However,as the project expanded to include the
new City Hall and the surrounding park area, the city adopted the name Denton Civic Center to
denote its status as the hub of a larger"Civic Center Municipal Complex."
In 1964,Denton citizens passed a series of bonds to fund the creation of a modern municipal
complex. With the passage of these bonds, the surrounding park—originally known as City Park or
Central Park—was renamed Civic Center Park(later renamed Quakertown Park),and the
centerpiece building was formally designated the Denton Civic Center some time after opening in
November 1967.In 1972,the Denton Record Chronicle used both Civic Center Building and Civic
Center Community Building interchangably for the facility.
In 1992,Resolution R92-040 named the complex the"O'Neill Ford Civic Complex"and states:"The
following buildings shall be located within the O'Neil Ford Civic Complex: Emily Fowler Library,
Denton Senior Center,Civic Center Pool,Civic/Convention Center and City Hall."
