Department Performance Scorecard – Strategic Services launched the Library’s Performance Scorecard, accessible via the City's Strategic Plan Dashboard under "Performance Scorecards." These scorecards assist departments with service delivery and continuous improvement efforts. The Library’s scorecard helps to tell the department’s story and demonstrate its dedication to providing inclusive access to all, creating a culture of lifelong learning, providing enriching experiences, and embracing technology while being a vital resource to the community. Denton Tennis and Pickleball Center Recognized – On Aug. 27, at the 2024 US Open in New York City, Parks and Recreation Tennis and Pickleball Center received the 2024 Outstanding Facility Award in Public Courts for the Large Tennis Center category from the United States Tennis Association (USTA). The award recognizes facilities for their quality, accessibility, layout, all-ages programming, and compliance with USTA standards. The USTA actively partnered with Parks and Recreation by providing design guidance and a $40,000 grant supporting the project. Staff contact: Jason Barrow, Parks and Recreation C. Scenic City Certification – Scenic Texas, an Austin-based nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and enhancing Texas’s visual environment, has recognized Denton as a Platinum-level Scenic City, based on their design and development standards for public roadways and spaces. Denton improved its 2020 Gold-level Scenic City designation this year due to improved codes, ordinances, and standards. Municipalities recognized through the program are regarded as pacesetters by Scenic Texas for their efforts to implement high-quality scenic standards at a community-wide level. City of Denton officials, including Mayor Gerard Hudspeth, will accept the designation at the Texas Municipal League’s Annual Conference on Oct. 10. For more details, visit www.scenictexas.org. Lillie FAICP Planning Excellence Program Recognition – The City of Denton is recognized by the American Planning Association Texas Chapter with the Richard R. Lillie FAICP Planning Excellence program recognition. This is the third year in a row that the City has received this honor. This recognition acknowledges communities for their excellence in the professional field of city planning. Staff contact: Trevor Crain, Capital Projects F.Denton Wins National Award – On Aug. 28, the City of Denton and Denton Television(DTV) won four national video programming awards at the National Association ofTelecommunication Officers and Advisors (NATOA) Annual Government ProgrammingAwards Ceremony. The awards program honors excellence in broadcast, cable, multimedia, and electronic programming produced by local government agencies. The Citydistinguished itself in video production by winning two first-place and two second-placeawards. •First Place – Environmental Issues - Landfill Tour •First Place – Storytelling - Father and Son Eclipse •Second Place – Edited Community Event - Day of the Dead: Coffin Races •Second Place – Special Audience - Empty Bowls of Denton All videos aired on DTV, were shared via social media channels, and are available on the City’s YouTube channel. Staff contact: Billy Matthews, Marketing and Communications Responses to Council Member Requests for Information A.Concrete Batch Plant Ownership and Relocation Efforts – On Aug. 19, Council MemberByrd observed changes at the Redi-Mix concrete batch plant near downtown and requestedthat staff revisit options for relocating the plant if there was an opportunity. Staff confirmed that the property received a new certificate of occupancy this year under Smyrna ReadyMix Concrete. In 2022, a Council Priority was set to explore options for relocating theplant. Staff worked with a broker to identify and present site alternatives to the then-property owner, who did not express interest in or select any proposed sites. With thechange in ownership, staff will contact the new owner and provide updates through the Council Priority Report. Staff contact: Christine Taylor, City Manager’s Office B.Lane Rental Request – On Aug 20, Max Kitzmiller from Barracuda Open Water andSelect Swimming spoke during public comment at the City Council Meeting to requestthe City’s assistance in providing lane rental space at the natatorium. Following the meeting, City staff connected with Mr. Kitzmiller and provided the current laneavailability: Monday - Friday, 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., which does not currently meet hisneeds. Based on the City’s current programming and the shared space with Denton ISD,the City cannot accommodate his request for evening lane rentals. City staff has sharedhis request with aquatic facilities within DFW to seek availability. Staff Contact: Christine Taylor, City Manager’s Office 3 C.Towing Signage – On Aug. 26 and 27, Mayor Hudspeth, Council Members Byrd, andHolland shared a communication from a visitor regarding towing and signage at a private paid parking lot and free city parking lot in the downtown area.
