Bird City Texas is a program created in 2018 by Audubon Texas and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department that recognizes leadership in habitatconservation, threat reduction, and community engagement for birds. Denton’s efforts haveearned a place as one of the first 15 certified communities. This achievement wasaccomplished with the collaboration of several City departments and outside organizations, including the University of North Texas, Texas Woman’s University, and the Elm Fork Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalists. Staff Contact: Karen Boerner, EnvironmentalServices & Sustainability C.Commercial Diversion Program Update—The Solid Waste and Recycling Department(SWR) has received approximately 1,100 diversion plans from commercial customers in compliance with the City’s Commercial Diversion Ordinance. The ordinance was adopted by Council on July 18, 2023, and initial communications to customers were distributed inSeptember 2023, with full compliance expected by June 30, 2024. Businesses are requiredto develop and share plans to redirect materials such as recyclables, construction waste, and bulky items from the landfill. Around 50 percent of commercial customers are currently compliant with submitting their diversion plan. The department is conducting final outreach efforts Jan. 27-31, 2025. Staff contact: Brandi Neal, Solid Waste andRecycling D.Animal Shelter Improvements – The most recent improvement to the Linda McNatt Animal CareFacility, as part of the City’s renewed focus on animalwelfare, is padded inserts for animal kennels to helpprevent a common injury, “happy tail.” Happy tailoccurs in the shelter when a dog wags its tail vigorously and repeatedly into the walls of its kennel and can leadto discomfort and abrasions. To help prevent andreduce instances of happy tail, brackets were installedinto the kennel wall to allow the insertion of durablepadding to protect the tails of dogs like King, pictured here. This improvement is a proof of concept andshelter staff will be seeking to add more padded kennelsimminently. Staff contact: Bailey Coleson, AnimalServices 2 E.Urgent Animal Placements – Complimenting the existing adoption process Denton AnimalServices (DAS) staff have developed an urgent placement list. Animals are eligible to be placed on the list if they have been in the shelter for three weeks or longer, if they’re suffering from continued kennel stress for longer than three days after they’ve been placedon a prescribed enrichment plan, or if they are recovering from a medical procedure orcondition. Often even a week out of the shelter and in a loving home can make a significantimpact on the mental health of an animal in need. The Urgent Placement List is available online and visible on the DAS adoptions webpage. Anyone who is interested in fostering or adopting one of these animals inneed can reach out toanimal.services@cityofdenton.com torequest more information and get involved. Staff contact: Bailey Coleson, Animal Services F.Mayor’s Shelter Pet Spotlight – Spud is a lively 2-year-old American Pit Bull Terrier witha zest for life and a heart full of love.
