Public Meetings & Agendas | Denton, TX (civicplus.com) General Information & Status Updates A.Mayor’s Pet Spotlight – Tilly is a spirited one-year-old mixed breed who has been in the shelter since Jan.2, 2025. Her largesize and high energy make her an ideal companion for activeindividuals or families who enjoy outdoor activities. Tilly isleash trained and a great partner for long walks or hikes. Shealso loves car rides and is ready for any adventure you have in mind. Tilly is crate trained, and food motivated, which makesher easy to manage. She tends to jump on people and can bedominant over other dogs. The ideal environment for her is ahome where she can be the center of attention or with a familyexperienced in managing such behaviors. Her spirit would greatly benefit from a loving environment that can provide herwith the stimulation and companionship. Staff contact: Bailey Coleson, AnimalServices B.National League of Cities (NLC) Congressional Conference – This week, a delegation ofCity leaders attended the NLC Congressional Conference in Washington, DC. The delegation included Mayor Hudspeth, Mayor Pro Tem Meltzer, Council Members Beck, Byrd, McGee, and Jester. While at the conference, the delegation met with Texas’ U.S.Senators Cornyn and Cruz, as well as Denton-area Congressional leaders U.S.Representatives Ronny Jackson, Brandon Gill, and Beth Van Duyne. Discussions centeredon the Community Development Block Grants and the Home Investment Partnership (HOME) programs, providing support for low-income residents; and addressing the electric distribution transformer backlog. Staff contact: Kristi Fogle, City Manager’s Office C.Transparency Trailblazer Recognition – The Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts’Transparency Star Program recognizes local governments for going above and beyond in their transparency efforts. In 2024, the Open Government and Compliance Star was added to the list of receivable stars. The City of Denton achieved this star within six months (6)months after its announcement. As of March 13, 2025, the City of Denton is one of elevenentities within the State of Texas to receive all six (6) stars. The City of Denton will berecognized In Absentia on March 18, 2025, in Austin, Texas to celebrate 10 years of Transparency Stars as a “Transparency Trailblazer.” The award recipients for the Transparency Stars can be found on the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts’ website,including links to each star within the entities. Staff contact, Jessica Williams, Finance D.DME Recognized as a Tree Line USA Utility – Denton Municipal Electric (DME) has been recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation as a 2025 Tree Line USA. Adequatelypruned and maintained trees increase service reliability because trees will have healthy rootsystems that reduce chances for decay, have fewer structural weaknesses, and ultimatelyresult in fewer downed lines during storms. Staff contact: Tony Puente, Denton MunicipalElectric 2 Responses to Council Member Requests for Information A.Public Art – On March 6, Council Member Beck inquired about public art grant funding and public arts programs. The City currently funds public art in two ways, through the useof Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT) and as part of our bond projects. This current fiscal yearincludes $100,000 of HOT support to the Greater Denton Arts Council. The 2023 BondProgram includes $2,716,000 of funding for public art at City facilities. Staff contact:Allison Wing, Parks and Recreation B.Neighborhood Meeting Feedback – On March 7, Mayor Pro Tem Meltzer shared inquiriesfrom the Ector Street Neighborhood Association’s meeting. The inquiries covered itemssuch as: •Roadway conditions on Ector Street. •After a field visit, staff recognized the need for repairs on Ector Street. Patching inthe areas will occur over the next few months. Ector Street is scheduled for a microseal in Fall 2025.The location for the upcoming Home Zone furniture store. o The Home Zone is planned along the southeast corner of University Drive (US 380) and Ector Street. Information on upcoming developments can befound on the City’s Active Development Website. •Street lighting on Cordell Street between Ector and Aileen streets. o Staff recommends additional community engagement before implementing additional street lighting on Cordell Street between Ector and Aileenstreets. •Sloped speed bumps to deter speeding on Ector or a speed study and consider installing a traffic light at Ector Street and University Drive. o City policy does not allow installing speed bumps; however, other options can be explored through a speed study. Staff will conduct a safety audit,speed study, and signal warrant study to determine the bestrecommendations for improving street conditions for the neighborhood.The expected completion time for the studies and improvements is at the end of the Summer 2025. Staff contacts: Tina Firgens, Development Services and Farhan Butt, Transportation C.Tree Rebate Program – On March 10, Council Member McGee requested information onthe City’s Tree Rebate Program. The program, part of the Denton Tree Initiative to increase tree canopy in the City, is available to City utility customers when planting aqualifying native or adaptive tree species within the city limits. Residents can receive upto $250 in rebates when they purchase up to five qualifying trees of five or 15-gallon sizeor two 30-gallon trees between Oct. 1 and May 1.
