Public Meetings & Agendas | Denton, TX (civicplus.com) General Information & Status Updates A. Mayor’s Pet Spotlight – Violet is a 6-year-old Labrador Retriever who has been at the shelter since June. She’s a high-energy girl who loves to play with toys and thrives on activity. Violet is food motivated, making her a great candidate for training and positive reinforcement. She sometimes jumps on people and pulls on the leash, so she’ll do best with a foster who can help her channel her enthusiasm and continue working on her manners. Typical of her breed, Violet is affectionate, intelligent, and eager to please. She would be a wonderful companion for an active household that can provide her with the exercise and attention she craves. Her extended stay in the shelter means she’s especially in need of a loving, supportive environment to help her shine. Please contact Denton Animal Services by phone at (940) 349-7594, or via email at Animal.Services@cityofdenton.com. Staff contact: Bailey Coleson, Animal Services. B. Work Session Room Privacy Glass Replacement – The smart film system in the City Council Work Session Room, which allows windows to switch between frosted and clear for privacy during Council Open and Closed Session meetings, is currently malfunctioning. To maintain confidentiality and the functionality of the space, a temporary static frosted film has been installed. This interim solution is not designed for repeated removal and will remain in place until permanent repairs are completed. Due to extended lead times for the necessary parts, the estimated date for the restoration of the smart film system is December 2025. Staff contact: Tom Gramer, Fleet and Facilities C. Denton #1 in the Nation in NRPA BioBlitz – The City of Denton and its team of volunteer observers ranked #1 in the nation for pollinator observations in the annual Parks for Pollinators BioBlitz, coordinated by the National Recreation and Parks Association. This program asks volunteers to the app, iNaturalist, to catalog photographs of pollinators in their local community, thereby providing a snapshot of local pollinator ecosystems. Volunteers provided almost 1,000 more observations than their next closest competitors. To see all the observations made by volunteers, visit the iNaturalist website. Staff contact: Ziad Kharrat, Parks and Recreation 2 D. Denton 311 Launches Text Updates and Waste Collection Reminders – Residents who contact Denton 311 will now have the option to receive real-time text updates regarding their service requests. Residents will also be able to set waste reminders through the Denton 311 app, notifying them when to set out trash and recycling carts and alerting them of any collection changes due to holidays or severe weather. Denton 311 was launched in April 2025 as part of a citywide initiative to enhance customer service delivery by simplifying how residents get assistance with non-emergency, city- related questions and service requests. Residents have multiple options for reaching Denton 311: • Mobile app: o Apple App Store o Google Play • Website: www.cityofdenton.com/Denton311 • From your cell phone: Dial 3-1-1 • From your landline: Dial (940) 349-7311 For more information, visit www.cityofdenton.com/311 . Staff contact: Sheila Gray E. Denton Ya’ Know Newsletter – Earlier this year, the Marketing and Communications team launched a twice-monthly resident e-newsletter, Denton Ya’ Know, which consistently has an open rate of 72-75% and will now serve as the City's primary citywide newsletter publication. Moving forward, the Citizen Connection will be reserved for the occasional large-scale operational or service update messaging to customers and not produced on a regular/monthly basis. Both publications were utilizing the same customer/distribution lists, but Denton Ya’ Know adds the option for non-customers to opt in, which has proven to result in a much higher audience and open/response rate. With the direction to move away from regular printed publications, the City stands to save more than $100,000 per year in printing and postage costs. Staff contact: Kayla Herrod, Marketing and Communications 3 Responses to Council Member Requests for Information A. Cemetery Maintenance – On Oct. 6, Mayor Hudspeth and Council Member McGee inquired about the tall grass and weeds observed at Oakwood Cemetery. The current service level includes mowing and weed-eating for approximately 37 acres (covering both Oakwood and IOOF) every other week. This service level has recently been challenged by ideal growth conditions. Warm temperatures and significant rainfall have caused a rapid surge in invasive vegetation, particularly King Ranch (KR) Bluestem, a fast-growing, highly resilient bunchgrass that can exceed a foot in height in a single week. KR Bluestem is difficult to control due to its deep root system and resilience. Staff is monitoring the situation and pulling resources when available to manage the two sites. Staff contact: Ziad Kharrat, Parks and Recreation B. Recycling Drop-off Centers – On Oct. 6, Council Member Holland inquired about the recycle containers at North Lakes Park being full. The City of Denton has two recycling drop-off centers – The Landfill at 1527 S. Mayhill Road, open Monday through Saturday, 7 am to 4, and North Lakes Park at Windsor and Hinkle Drive, open during park hours. The following items are accepted for recycling and must be unbagged and sorted by material: • Cardboard and boxboard (flatten boxes) • Paper (junk mail, magazines, newspaper) • Aluminum cans and steel cans (no scrap metal) • Plastic bottles, tubs, and jugs (no plastic bags, wrap, film, or Styrofoam) • Glass bottles and jars (remove all lids) • Cartons The containers at North Lakes Park include three for cardboard and three for mixed recycling which are picked up on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday each week. To address the containers being filled, an additional cardboard container will be set out on Fridays and Staff will continue to monitor the containers to evaluate additional options. Staff contact: Brenda Haney, Solid Waste & Recycling 4 Upcoming Community Events and Public Meetings Please visit the City of Denton website for upcoming community events and details. Information A.
